The Brains for Hope Foundation, started by Maggie and Andrew Saal in honor of their daughter, a brain cancer survivor, will host second annual gala on June 1st at Parkview Mirro Center to raise money for pediatric cancer research.  The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner, inspirational program including Melanie Justice, sister of Maddie Justice, who lost her battle to cancer in 2013, silent auction, live auction, and live entertainment by Good Night Gracie.

The Brains for Hope Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission of raising awareness and funds to support pediatric cancer research.  On January 10, 2012, the Saals’ daughter was diagnosed with Primitive Neuro Ectodermal Tumor (PNET).  This is a rare type of brain cancer that affects only 400 kids worldwide each year with a survival rate of only 20%.

During their fourteen month fight, the Saals endured a difficult battle with brain cancer, but kept their focus on the 20% survival rate.  They stayed positive and were blessed with the best physicians and care possible as well as the support of their friends, family, and the community of Fort Wayne, Indiana.  This incredible support gave them hope and strength during this time and ultimately inspired them to pay it forward by raising money through their foundation for other children and families fighting childhood cancer.

Pediatric cancer is highly underfunded and far from perfect.  Many of the drugs used have not changed for decades and have negative lasting effects on the children that they treat.  The Saals are hoping to change this by raising money and awareness for the importance of pediatric cancer research.

Last year’s inaugural event raised $75,000 for pediatric cancer research and the Saal family is hoping to raise even more money this year.
