Lantern 35 Auction Preview

One of my favorite parts of the job is checking out the new items listed for upcoming auctions. Whether it is a longtime collector who has decided it is time to share his collection with others or clients with unique or hard-to-find collectibles and memorabilia, the launch of new auctions always brings personal property items with cool stories and excitement.

There are two (2) ways to auction personal property items with Scheerer McCulloch: (i) we regularly hold auctions launched from the Lantern, a Fort Wayne landmark and state-of-the-art auction gallery and showroom; and (ii) off-site personal property and real estate auctions at our client’s property.

This week, we will be launching Lantern 35 from the Lantern and I had the chance to catch up with a few of our sellers.

One of our sellers, Mike S, started collecting cars and superhero collectibles back in the 70s. Early on, he collected Hotwheels®, Batmobiles® and James Bond cars. He vividly remembers getting into racecars with Formula One, specifically the John Player Special. His first NASCAR was the Dale Jarrett interstate battery car and he said that it was what got him “hooked.” After almost 50 years of collecting, Mike has decided it is time for him to share his collection with others. I asked him about a few of his favorites and although there was a little hesitation I think I have the unofficial top 3:

-When Jeff Gordon won the Brickyard 400 as a rookie, he did so in a back-up car and Mike has a piece of metal from the original car when it crashed:

-Mike loved talking about the 1/4 scale Richard Childress engine with changing gears and you can actually see the pistons:

-and his 2001 Commemorative Corvette, which he noted has phenomenal detail:

Another group that caught my eye are the two (2) Community R2 refined coverage three-way loudspeakers from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. These two speakers were located at the Pagoda, which is “one of the most recognizable structures at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and in worldwide motor sports.”[i] The current owner obtained these speakers in July 2020 as part of the IMS audio system project. This is the perfect piece of history for any race fan or audiophile!

Check out our preview for Lantern 35 and happy bidding!
